free plans: how to make an Impossible Stack Sculpture |
|
Basic Description |
This simple sculpture flaunts itself by apparently defying natural laws. A series of blocks are stacked in such a way that the topmost one extends beyond its supports. Viewers are convinced that the blocks are attached to each other, but closer inspection indicates that they are wholly independent The sculpture relies on some basic physical principles. Read on for a thorough description and several ideas. |
To ensure that all the pieces are identical, we will align, clamp, and then sand them all at once. We used bar clamps and them put the entire stack in a vise. When repositioning the stack in the vise make sure that at least one clamp remains engaged to maintain the proper alignment. See the image on the right. While you are sanding, make sure that you are staying square to the sanding surface. We worked our way through finer and finer grits of sandpaper to complete all of the requisite edge sanding because it is much more efficient at this stage. |
