free plans: how to make an Impossible Stack Sculpture |
|
Basic Description |
This simple sculpture flaunts itself by apparently defying natural laws. A series of blocks are stacked in such a way that the topmost one extends beyond its supports. Viewers are convinced that the blocks are attached to each other, but closer inspection indicates that they are wholly independent The sculpture relies on some basic physical principles. Read on for a thorough description and several ideas. |
The first piece you just created will serve as the template for all the other pieces. Simply place it on more of your scrap wood and trace the outline with a sharp pencil. You can make anywhere from 8 to 15 blocks but we have found that 10 or so is sufficient. Increasing the number does not improve the effect much. Repeat the cutting and sanding processes for the remaining pieces until you have finalized all pieces. You don't need to be overconcerned with bringing the shape of the blocks precisely down to the line you made because in the next step, we will group all of the blocks together and sand them to the identical size. |
