free plans: how to make a Blind Spot Display |
|
Basic Description | This project exploits a fascinating phenomenon of our vision: the blind spot. There is a spot in each eye that lacks the ability to function like the rest of the eye - it cannot supply visual data to your brain. Under normal circumstances, the information collected by the other eye fills in the missing area, but under the proper conditions, the blind spot becomes apparent. Making the simple display with glow-in-the-dark paint and positioning it near a bed allows for a surprisingly fun activity while falling asleep. Read on for more information and the simple plan. |
MaterialWe painted the display, but you really just need two separated dots; they could be made of any material. Using glow in the dark paint is particularly effective because the contrast between the glowing dot and the rest of the dark room is exaggerated and highlights the blind spots. You could also use a battery and a small LED. SizeThe dots should be smaller than your blind spot - we like to make them roughly the same size so the display works for both the left and right eyes. You can make a huge display with huge dots separated by a significant distance if the viewer is sufficiently far away. Just keep in mind that the most effective display puts a dot in the field of vision amidst some other contrasting color. |
