free plans: how to make a Yo Yo | |
Basic Description | Here is a great example of the power of doing it yourself. Despite also owning a few high-tech yo-yos, this homemade yo-yo is the one I use most often. The size and shape are all custom fit to my hand. Most importantly, the fact that I made it incorporates a level of satisfaction to yo-yoing that a manufactured yo-yo cannot match. This is a simple and classic project that also makes a great gift, and you won't believe the functionality that you can create. |
There is plenty of information available on the internet for yo-yo beginners. Yoyoguy offers a good place to start.
Design ConsiderationsMaterialsWe made our yo-yo out of maple, but you can choose other hardwoods. If the user throws the yo-yo and it hits a hard surface, such as the ground, the hardwood can break. A stronger alternative is to use plywood. You can also try aluminum and plastic. SizeYou want the yo-yo to feel comfortable in your hand but you can experiment with other sizes. If you avoid the sanding and finishing steps, you can make test yo-yos in a very short period of time. You can make a few samples to try different widths and diameters until you achieve the functionality and feel that you desire. |
